ICOM-CC PTM Examples.

In order to demonstrate the potential of PTM technique for documenting the surface texture of paintings a set of ten test paintings where produced, six small (206x253mm) canvases and four small (224x246mm) panels. Each of the test paintings where examined using the PTM process at various stages in there production and then after they had been distressed, altered or damaged. Further details of each of the test paintings and the resultant PTMs are included here.

Panel four:

Painted to exhibit strong impasto and brush marks.

Overpainted in patches to demonstrate pentimenti.

Panel three:

Painted to show subtle impasto, light brush strokes and the woodgrain texture showing through the thin paint.

Distressed by snapping the panel in two.

Panel two:

Painted to show subtle impasto, light brush strokes and the woodgrain texture showing through the thin paint.

Distressed by cycling the painting between 30% and 80% relative humidity.

Panel one:

Painted to exhibit thick impasto applied with a palete knife and a brush.

Distressed by striking the front of the panel with a hammer.

Canvas six:

Painted with long linear brush strokes, disrupted with curved brush strokes.

Distressed by cycling the painting between 30% and 80% relative humidity.

Canvas five:

Painted with long linear brush strokes.

Distressed by dropping the painting ~1.5m.

Canvas four:

Painted with more subtle brush strokes and impasto with canvas texture showing through the thin paint.

Overpainted in patches to demonstrate pentimenti.

Canvas three:

Painted with more subtle brush strokes and impasto with canvas texture showing through the thin paint.

Distressed by running a knife blade across the back of the canvas.

Canvas two:

Painted with strong brush strokes and high impasto.

Distressed by pushing a chair leg through the front of the painting.

Canvas one:

Painted with strong brush strokes and high impasto.

Distressed by pressing it against a separate piece of heavy weight canvas.
