The archangel Gabriel announces to the Virgin that she will bear the Son of God. New Testament (Luke 1: 26-38). Above her hovers a dove who represents the Holy Spirit, the medium through whom the Christ Child was conceived. Beside her rests a book, the text of which is not decipherable. The Virgin\'s pose may have been intended to express her reply to Gabriel: \'Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.\'
NG 5472 was probably meant to hang above the tomb of Poussin\'s patron Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588-1657) in S. Maria Sopra Minerva, Rome. Poussin wrote in a letter of 24 December 1657 that he was to work on a sepulchre for Pozzo; the date on the inscription is that of the year of Pozzo\'s death, and the paving and tablet suggest that the painting was intended to be incorporated into an architectural setting.
Another version of the subject from a series by Poussin (Munich, Alte Pinakothek) is dated about 1655.
Possibly Thomas Bladon sale, 1775, or Robert Udny sale, 1804; presented by Christopher Norris, 1944.
