NG 5453 is part of the predella of an altarpiece; three other panels in the Collection come from the same predella (NG 5451, 5452, 5454). They have been associated with an altarpiece dated 1453 of the Virgin and Child with Saints (New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art) which includes Saint John the Baptist. Giovanni di Paolo repeated the composition of these scenes in a series of vertical panels showing episodes from the life of Saint John the Baptist which formed shutters closing possibly around a statue of the Baptist or perhaps a reliquary cupboard.
