This episode from the life of Saint Benedict is related in The Golden Legend. The young saint in a cave is receiving food being let down in a basket at the end of a rope attached to a bell by Saint Romanus.
NG 5224 has a false frame with a false coat of arms. It has occasionally been related to the predella of the altarpiece discussed under NG 1897. This is highly unlikely, although stylistically NG 5224 seems to date from the same period.
The composition is related to Taddeo Gaddi\'s fresco in the refectory at S. Croce, Florence, and the angel (top right) was probably part of another scene: The Priest at the Easter Meal receiving Word from an Angel of Saint Benedict\'s Hunger in the Wilderness.
