In the seventeenth century Saint Mark and Saint Sebastian (NG 4946) were recorded together as parts of an altarpiece in the chapel of the silkweavers\' guild in the church of S. Maria dei Crociferi in Venice. They flanked an Annunciation (St Petersburg, Hermitage) by Cima but were probably only assembled as parts of this triptych at a later date.
The figures seem to be indebted to Venetian sculpture: the saints by Pietro Lombardo (about 1435-1515) on Doge Mocenigo\'s monument in SS. Giovanni e Paolo are similarly framed in shell niches.
