Tournaments, such as the one depicted on the front of this cassone, were frequently held to celebrate weddings between great families. This tournament may be taking place in the Piazza S. Croce, Florence. On the painted panels at the ends of the cassone are armoured figures with footmen.
Among the coats of arms and heraldic devices on NG 4906 are those of the Spinelli and perhaps the Tanagli families. The painting must date from the second half of the fifteenth century. The chest has been heavily restored. The main panel has been associated with the Master of the Jarves Cassoni, and with the workshop of Marco del Buono (1402?-89?) and Apollonio di Giovanni. Attribution to the latter is likely and a date of about 1455-65 is probable.
