The picture was painted in the final year of Rembrandt\'s life, 1669, and is one of his last works. He died on 4 October and was buried on 8 October in the Westerkerk, Amsterdam. Another Self Portrait of the same year is in the Mauritshuis, The Hague.
The fact that only the last letter of the signature remains makes it likely that the canvas has been cut down by about 3 cm on the left side. X-radiographs reveal two significant pentimenti: originally the turban was higher and fuller and entirely white (as in the Self Portrait in Kenwood House,London), and the hands were depicted open with a brush or maulstick being held in the painter\'s right hand.
