The saint is now dressed in his characteristic habit and wears the narrow tonsure sanctioned by Pope Innocent. This episode from the life of Saint Francis of Assisi (about 1181-1226, founder of the Franciscan Order) probably follows Saint Bonaventure\'s Legenda Maior. It is also possible that this scene represents the Granting of Indulgence of the Portiuncula as requested by the friars in a document of 1439.
NG 4757-63 come from the back of the double-sided high altarpiece of S. Francesco, Borgo Sansepolcro, showing eight scenes from the life of Saint Francis tiered in pairs on either side of Saint Francis in Glory (Settignano, Berenson Collection). NG 4759 was probably in the bottom left corner of the reverse. It is debated whether, in the scheme accepted here, the next panel was the Stigmatisation (NG 4760) or Saint Francis\' Mystic Marriage with Poverty (Chantilly, Musée Condé). For further details on the altarpiece see under NG 4757.
