The sitters are the children of Daniel Graham, a prosperous apothecary, and his wife: Henrietta Catherine (born 1733), in a blue dress, Richard Robert (born 1734), winding a sérinette, or bird organ, Anna Maria (born 1738), dancing, and Thomas (born 1740), who died before the painting was finished. The setting is probably the Grahams\' house in Pall Mall. Hogarth includes many allusions to the brevity of childhood.
