The Virgin and Child embrace. On the reverse is a cross painted with triangles and circles at the ends of its four arms; such a design may distantly derive from Byzantine ivories.
It has been suggested that NG 4741 formed one half of a diptych, with a Christ on the Cross (Budapest, Szépmüvészeti Museum) attached to it on the right. It has in the past been variously attributed to Giunta Pisano (active early to mid-thirteenth century), the Master of San Martino, a follower of Coppo di Marcovaldo (documented 1261-75) and the circle of Guido da Siena (documented 1262-about 1271). At present it appears impossible to attribute such a work with precision.
NG 4741 was stolen from the Gallery in 1970.
Bought in Assisi by W.B. Chamberlin, about 1890; by whom presented, 1934.
