Reni painted variants on the Glorification of the Virgin from the beginning of his career, and NG 214 is generally considered to be the culmination of his interest in the theme, and is dated to about 1607.
NG 214 clearly develops from Reni\'s Glorification of the Virgin of about 1602-3 (Madrid, Prado), and there are a number of drawings that, while not directly related to NG 214, show Reni\'s evolving approach to this subject. The composition was copied in 1626 by Domenichino (Bayonne, Musée Bonnat).
