Constantijn Huygens the Elder (1596-1687), Lord of Zuylichem, served in the Dutch embassies in Venice and London and was knighted by James I in 1622. He became secretary to the Stadholder, Prince Frederik Hendrik of Orange in 1625, held the same post with his successor, Willem II, advised Frederick Hendrik\'s widow, Amalia van Solms, and served King William III until his death. Huygens was particularly interested in the arts: he wrote about painting (praising the young Rembrandt, among others), composed music and songs and was a poet. With his friend, the architect Pieter Post, he built his own house in The Hague. Behind Huygens hangs a tapestry showing Saint Francis before the Sultan; in the centre of its upper border is the sitter\'s coat of arms. Above the fireplace is a seascape in the style of Jan Porcellis (about 1584-1632), and beneath it a small bust portrait. The objects on the table refer to Huygens\'s interests in astronomy, music and architecture. They include a pair of terrestrial and celestial globes, a chittarone and architectural drawings.
Huygens is recorded in Amsterdam, where NG 212 was probably painted, between 22 February and 27 April 1627. It may be the work which he later described as having been painted shortly before
