The composition probably derives from a lost cartoon by Leonardo, who had been asked in 1504 (by Isabella d\'Este) for a painting showing Christ as a youth. There are numerous other versions of NG 18, some of similar, but none of higher, quality (e.g. After Luini NG 2088).
