The watering place is one of the few remains of the château at Marly-le-Roi, constructed for Louis XIV in the late seventeenth century and destroyed in the 1790s, after the Revolution. Sisley lived at Marly (west of Paris) from 1875 until 1877 and often painted this site. Here the watering place is shown in the foreground with its surface frozen and covered with snow except for a small corner at the right beneath an outlet. Beyond is the boundary wall of the gardens and a road leading south towards Versailles (see Pissarro NG 3265 for another view of this area).
