The acrobat Miss La La caused a sensation at the Cirque Fernando in Paris (on the corner of the boulevard Rochechouart and the rue des Martyrs), performing various feats of strength. In NG 4121 Miss La La is suspended from the rafters of the circus building by a rope clenched between her teeth.
Degas sketched at the Cirque Fernando in January 1879, and made several studies, including a pastel study of Miss La La (London, Tate Gallery), before embarking on NG 4121.
NG 4121 was exhibited in April 1879 at the fourth Impressionist exhibition.
