In 1740 the painting was engraved by Lépicié with a French inscription (here translated): \'If this charming child takes on so well/ The serious air and imposing manner of a schoolmistress/ May one not think that dissimulation and ruse/ At the latest come to the Fair Sex at birth.\'
NG 4077 is thought to be the painting exhibited at the the Salon in 1740 (no. 62) with the title La Petite Maîtresse d\'Ecole. Some affinity with the design and handling of Chardin\'s A Lady taking Tea (Glasgow, Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery) of 1735 suggests the date of execution to be then or soon after. Other versions of the composition, not necessarily autograph, exist (Dublin, National Gallery; Washington, National Gallery of Art).
