This work and NG 4039 are from a ceiling decoration in the Scuola di S. Francesco ai Frari, Venice. At the corners of the design were four panels with depictions of the evangelists (now Budapest), while at the sides were the two works in the Collection and two other images of the Franciscan saints Bernardino and Anthony (also Budapest). In the centre of the ceiling was a panel, now lost, of Saint Francis receiving the stigmata. The surviving works are comparable to Pordenone\'s Beato Lorenzo Giustiniani altarpiece (Venice, Accademia), which was commissioned in 1532, and are thought to date from the same period.
Said to have been bought in Venice by Edward Chaney, mid-nineteenth century; Sir Claude Phillips Bequest, 1924.
