This painting achieved some fame as a devotional image in the eighteenth century, and it was briefly in the collection of Thomas Gainsborough (1787-9). NG 3938 was formerly considered the work of a follower of Murillo; it is now attributed to the artist himself.
Said to be the picture bought from Don Juan del Castillo by Don Francisco Eminente for Charles II of Spain, about 1670; Mond Bequest, 1924.
