NG 3918 apparently follows Fra Clemente Mazza\'s Life of Saint Zenobius (first printed in 1487). From left to right the four scenes are: Zenobius rejecting the marriage his parents propose for him; his baptism by the bishop of Florence; the subsequent baptism of his mother; Zenobius, now bearded, being invested as Bishop of Florence by the Pope, Saint Damasus.
NG 3918 and 3919 formed part of a series of the miracles of Saint Zenobius (two other panels are in Dresden, Gemäldegalerie; and one is in New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art). The series were probably spalliere (backboards) in a Florentine palace, and it has recently been suggested that they may have been made for a member of the Girolami family who had a special devotion to Saint Zenobius. It has further been suggested that they were painted for the marriage of either Raffaello (Raphael) Girolami in 1497 or his brother Zanobi (Zenobius) in 1500.
Said to have come from the Rondinelli collection, Florence; bought by J.P. Richter for Ludwig Mond, 1891; Mond Bequest, 1924.
