NG 3917 is probably from the upper tier of a polyptych. A Saint Michael (Settignano, Berenson collection) may have been the centre panel of the main tier. Other panels which could also have been part of the altarpiece include Saint Peter (Washington), Saint John the Baptist (Florence, Bardini Museum), a Bishop and a Pope (Padua) which could have formed the side panels of the main tier; and, on the upper tier; a Martyr Bishop (Padua), a Bishop (Boston, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum) and Saint Stephen (Bellagio, Gibert (formerly Frizzoni) collection).
