Once attributed to Bartolo di Fredi, this picture has now been convincingly attributed to Giovanni di Nicola, on the basis of its style and technique (especially the punchwork). NG 3896 is likely to have formed part of a polyptych (it was presumably to the left of a central panel showing the Virgin and Child).
The clasps on Saint Anthony\'s book were drawn in, but seem never to have been painted. The inner moulding of the frame is original. The pastiglia is original but regilded.
