NG 3858 was originally the right-hand part of a painting of the Brasserie de Reichshoffen, begun in about 1877, that Manet cut into two pieces. The left half of the composition is now in Winterthur (Oskar Reinhart Collection). NG 3858 was enlarged on the right and a new background (of a dancer on a stage and musicians) was added. The Brasserie de Reichshoffen was apparently in the boulevard Rochechouart, Paris.
The transformation of the café scene into a café-concert was completed by the spring of 1880 when the picture was shown under its present title.
Bought at the Manet sale, 1884, for Charles Haviland; bought by the Trustees of the Courtauld Fund, 1924.
