In the centre is the Nieuwe Kerk and just to the left of it, in the distance, the town hall; on the right are the houses of the Vrouwenrecht. The view is taken from the corner of the Oude Langendijk and Oosteinde, looking roughly north-west. The Nieuwe Kerk and town hall still exist in much the same state as they appear here. On the left is, apparently, the booth of a musical instrument vendor with, in the foreground, a viola da gamba and, against the wall, a lute.
The function and method of display of NG 3714 have been much debated. Its exaggerated perspective and the cutting-off of the foreshortened viola da gamba are the two principal features which lend support to the suggestion that the painting formed part of a perspective box or peepshow. Such a box probably had a curved back. But no closely comparable box survives and so any reconstruction must remain hypothetical. However Fabritius, who according to early biographers was interested in perspective and illusionism, is described in four documents as having made perspective boxes.
