In the past various titles have been given to this painting, among them An Old Man\'s Head and A Jewish Rabbi. The identification as a Jew can be traced back only to the early nineteenth century.
NG 190 is signed and dated, but the last digit of the date is hard to read; it may be read as a 7. 1657 would be acceptable on stylistic grounds.
The same man seems to have been used by Rembrandt as a model in a number of other works of the 1650s and 1660s, including Aristotle contemplating the Bust of Homer, 1653 (New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art); the so-called Portrait of a Rabbi, 1657 (San Francisco, Palace of the Legion of Honor); and A Bearded Man, 1661 (St Petersburg, Hermitage). A copy of NG 190 was painted by Gainsborough in about 1770 (London, Royal Collection).
Collection of the Duke of Argyll before 1781; collection of Jeremiah Harman by 1836; bought, 1844.
