NG 3266 is probably unfinished. The composition relates to a smaller painting, dated 1869 (Birmingham, Barber Institute), which Puvis showed at the Salon of 1870. Puvis made a large number of drawings and studies of the individual figures in this picture. According to tradition, Salome\'s features are based on those of the Princess Marie Cantacuzène (who later became the artist\'s wife) and the face of Herod (standing on the right) is said to have been modelled on that of the writer Anatole France.
Acquired from the heirs of the painter by Durand-Ruel, 1898; Sir Hugh Lane Bequest, 1917.
