This is Manet\'s first major painting of modern city life. A crowd of fashionable Parisians has gathered to listen to a concert in the Tuileries gardens. The spectators include many of the artist\'s friends and family. Manet himself appears at the far left; next to him is the painter Albert de Balleroy; seated to their right is the poet and sculptor Zacharie Astruc; further back, the three men in conversation are the poet Charles Baudelaire, the critic Théophile Gautier and Baron Taylor. Immediately to their left is the painter Henri Fantin-Latour. In the right-hand section of the painting, the standing man leaning forward slightly is probably the artist\'s brother, Eugène, and behind him, seated against a tree, is Jacques Offenbach, the composer of popular operettas.
Manet made several studies in the gardens, but the final picture was probably painted in the studio, and he used photographs for some of the portraits.
