Early inventories identify the man as \'Hernoul le Fin\' or \'Arnoult Fin\' (Arnolfini), probably the Lucchese merchant Giovanni di Arrigo Arnolfini (about 1400-72) who resided in Bruges. His wife was Giovanna Cenami; the date of their marriage is unknown. Two further figures, one of whom may be the artist, are reflected in the mirror on the rear wall which is surrounded by scenes from the Passion. A carved figure of Saint Margaret(?) appears on the chairback. The dog, shoes, single burning candle, prayer beads, brush, oranges, etc., have been variously interpreted as having religious, nuptial and sexual significance. The man\'s gestures may suggest that he is taking an oath, but the theory that NG 186 is a painted record of an actual marriage ceremony remains unproven.
NG 186 was first recorded in 1516, when it had shutters, and when it was owned by Margaret of Austria (see Netherlandish NG 2613.2).
There is a notable pentimento in the man\'s right hand. The woman\'s apparently swollen form does not imply pregnancy.
Gift from Don Diego de Guevara (died 1520) to Margaret of Austria (1480-1530); bought, 1842.
