From about 1840 Barye associated with the artists working around Barbizon and the Forest of Fontainebleau. He produced numerous paintings and drawings of this area which are often close in style to the work of Théodore Rousseau and Diaz. The attribution of this painting to Barye seems secure and it may represent rocks at the Gorges d\'Apremont, a favourite motif near Barbizon.
