NG 181 shows Perugino\'s awareness of Verrocchio\'s marble Virgin and Child (Florence, Bargello), and must therefore date from after 1472 when he joined Verrocchio\'s workshop in Florence; a date of soon after 1500 is probable and some degree of workshop participation is also likely.
NG 181 was originally round-topped and it is now displayed with a re-created addition at the top. The Virgin\'s robe is painted in ultramarine, the most expensive and intense blue pigment and one often reserved for the Virgin\'s drapery.
Apparently bought in Perugia; collection of William Beckford by 1820; from whom bought, 1841.
