NG 3134 is not known to represent a specific battle or historical event. The figures are in seventeenth-century dress.
The architecture and the cypress trees show that the scene is a southern one, presumably Italian, and the picture no doubt reflects Verschuring\'s experience of Italy. However, it is unlikely to date from the artist\'s Italian years: a very similar battle scene, signed and dated 1677, was in the Czernin collection in Vienna (in 1936) and NG 3134 probably also dates from around 1677.
