Comparison of the sitter\'s distinctive features with other likenesses (e.g. portrait medals) confirms the identification with Niccolò Marcello, Doge of Venice from 1473 to 1474.
Pentimenti visible by infra-red examination suggest that NG 3100 is not (as had previously been supposed) a copy of a portrait of Marcello.
