The infant Baptist stands in the wilderness embracing the lamb, a symbol of Christ. New Testament (John 1: 29 and 36).
NG 176 is the companion to the Infant Christ as the Good Shepherd (private collection, on loan to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery); the two pictures were together until 1840. They decorated the altar erected in the Plaza de S. Maria la Blanca in Seville in 1665 during the festivities for the church\'s inauguration, and were presumably painted shortly before.
Collection of the Comte de Lassay (died 1750); bought from Lord Ashburton, 1840.
