The Virgin is seated on a stone throne. Jesus is eating grapes, a eucharistic symbol. Two angels with lutes are seated at the base of the throne (the bottom edge has been cut), and two kneel beside the throne, set slightly back.
NG 3046 was the centre of an altarpiece commissioned from Masaccio in 1426 by the notary Ser Giuliano degli Scarsi for the chapel of St Julian (Giuliano) in S. Maria del Carmine, Pisa, where it was seen by Vasari in 1550. The side panels with standing saints are now lost, although the predella and some pinnacle panels survive (Berlin, Staatliche Museen; Naples, Capodimonte; Pisa, Museo Nazionale; Malibu, J. Paul Getty Museum). It is debated whether this was the centre of a polyptych or a unified pala.
In NG 3046 the influence of sculpture, especially that of Donatello, is pervasive. Masaccio employed a rational lighting system with cast shadows and linear perspective. The capitals of the throne are of the Corinthian, Ionic and Composite orders, reflecting the interest of Florentine artists in the 1420s in classical architecture. The paint surface has suffered considerable losses and old retouchings have discoloured. The Virgin\'s red dress is painted over silver leaf.
Collection of Miss Woodburn, 1855; bought with a contribution from the NACF, 1916.
