The sitter holds a portrait medal of Gattinaria (1465-1530) who became Chancellor to the Emperor Charles V in 1518. The sitter may be the medallist who produced the medal, or a protégé of Gattinaria (various specific identifications have been proposed).
The medal is supposed to be of about 1530, and was perhaps struck as a memorial after Gattinaria\'s death. This might indicate the date of NG 2607, although the sitter\'s costume has been said to suggest a date of about 1545-50.
