In 1533 she married by proxy Francesco Maria Sforza, Duke of Milan, who died in 1535. She is depicted dressed in mourning clothes, aged 16.
NG 2475 was apparently commissioned by Henry VIII, King of England (1509-47) who planned to make her his fourth bride. Holbein visited Brussels in 1538, and on 12 March is recorded as having made a portrait (probably a drawing) of Christina in a three-hour sitting. NG 2475 is likely to have been painted soon after the Brussels visit. The marriage did not take place and Henry wed Anne of Cleves instead. Christina later married François, Duc de Bar, who became Duc de Lorraine, and died in 1545, leaving her Regent of Lorraine.
Apparently in the inventory of Henry VIII, 24 April 1542; in the inventory of the Lumley collection, about 1590; in the inventory of the Arundel collection, 1654; sold by the 15th Duke of Norfolk to Colnaghi\'s, 1909; bought from them by the NACF with the aid of an anonymous donation, and presented, 1909.
