Augusta Anne, Lady Cockburn (1749-1837), was the daughter of the Revd Francis Ayscough, later Dean of Bristol. In 1769 she married Sir James Cockburn, 8th Bt, as his second wife. Her three eldest children were James, later General Sir James Cockburn, 9th Bt (1771-1852), kneeling on the left; George, later Admiral Sir George Cockburn, 10th Bt (1772-1853), behind his mother; and William, later the Revd Sir William Cockburn, 11th Bt, Dean of York (1773-1858), on his mother\'s knee. The macaw was a pet in Reynolds\'s household, and was apparently added as an afterthought.
The composition of NG 2077 recalls sixteenth and seventeenth-century paintings of Charity (e.g. Van Dyck NG 6494). NG 2077 was engraved by C. Wilkin (1750-1814) and published in 1791 as Cornelia and her Children. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1774.
In the collections of descendants until about 1900; bequeathed by Alfred Beit, 1906.
