This view shows the interior of the Buurkerk from the door in the north side, looking south-west. Hanging on a column in the centre background is a guild board. In the recess of the pier on the right are the Tables of the Commandments, above which appear the head and shoulders of Moses. Higher on the same pier are a sword and shield, and at the bottom of it a drawing in red of an episode from the popular thirteenth-century French story of the four sons of Aymon of Dordogne. They are shown escaping on their magic horse Bayard, after one of them, Renaud, killed Charlemagne\'s nephew. To the right of this is a sketch of a woman.
A drawing by Saenredam (Utrecht, Municipal Archives) dated 16 August 1636 shows the interior from the same viewpoint. NG 1896 corresponds with the right half of it. A painting corresponding to the left half of the drawing, which is the same size as NG 1896, is in Fort Worth (Kimbell Art Museum). It is signed and dated 1645.
Said to have been in the \'van der Pott\' (Pot ?) collection, Rotterdam; all or part of this collection was bought in 1824 or 1825 by Charles Galli and taken to Edinburgh; bought by Arthur Kay, Glasgow, probably 1896; by whom presented, 1902.
