NG 1842 has been attributed to Sassetta and to Sano di Pietro (1405-81), both of whom were active in Siena, but it is by no means clear whether it can, on stylistic grounds, be associated with works produced in that city. An undated letter stuck to the reverse of the fresco suggests that it was acquired in Florence at the \'Convento delle Poverine, Via della Scala\'. However, this may be misleading because the Convent of S. Gerolamo delle Poverine is on the Via Tripoli, which is a long way from the Via della Scala.
