After a night of debauchery, the Viscount has returned from a brothel; a dog sniffs a prostitute\'s cap hanging from his pocket. His wife yawns after a night of playing cards; the remains of the party are strewn across the room. The household steward departs at the left holding unpaid bills. In his pocket is a copy of a sermon called Regeneration by the Methodist preacher George Whitefield.
NG 114 is one of a series of six paintings (see also NG 113 and 115-18).
Auctioned by Hogarth with the other five paintings in the series, 1751; bought by John Lane and passed to his nephew, Col. John Fenton Cawthorne; bought by J.J. Angerstein, 1797; bought with the J.J. Angerstein collection, 1824.
