The costumes of the sitters appear to be typical of the early 1650s. NG 1699 has in the past been attributed to Vermeer and to Michiel Sweerts (1618-62/4). Neither suggestion is tenable, but the work does appear to be by an artist familiar with painting in Delft in the 1650s, and perhaps slightly predates, stylistically, Nouts\'s portrait in the Rijksmuseum (see biography) of 1656.
Before 1900 the picture was cut in half. In 1915, after both halves had entered the collection, they were rejoined, and replacements of missing portions were added at the top, bottom and centre between the two sections.
