Jacob Jacobsz. Trip (1575-1661) was a wealthy Dordrecht merchant. In 1603 he had married Margaretha de Geer and went into business with her brother Louis de Geer, one of the greatest iron-makers and armament manufacturers of the day. This portrait is a pendant to Rembrandt\'s portrait Margaretha de Geer (NG 1675). The couple were also painted by other artists; their identity is confirmed by comparison with a pair of portraits by Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp which were in the collection of the de Geer family.
Two of their sons, Louis and Hendrick, who also dealt in armaments, built the palatial Trippenhuis on the Kloveniersburgwal in Amsterdam in 1660-2, and these two portraits may have been commissioned by Rembrandt to hang there. Jacob Trip died in 1661 and this portrait may have been painted not from life, but from another portrait, perhaps by J.G. Cuyp.
The signature, just above the sitter\'s left hand, is fully visible only in ultra-violet light. It is cut off by the edge of the canvas: this would suggest that the painting has been reduced in size, perhaps by as much as 5 cm on the right-hand side. X-radiographs reveal that Trip\'s right hand was originally slightly higher and that he sat in a simple, round-backed chair.
With NG 1675 probably in the Lee Family collection in the eighteenth century; bought, 1899.
