The subject comes from a comedy called El Hechizado por Fuerza (\'The Forcibly Bewitched\') by Antonio de Zamora, which was first performed in 1698. In order to frighten the timorous Don Claudio into marriage with Doña Leonora, he has been made to believe that her slave, Lucía, has bewitched him and that his life will last only as long as the lamp in her room remains alight. Here he replenishes the lamp with oil. To frighten him further a grotesque painting of a \'dance of donkeys\' has been hung on the wall behind. He describes the lamp, which is fashioned in the form of a ram as \'lampara descomunal\' (\'monstrous lamp\'); the first parts of these two words are inscribed at the lower right.
NG 1472 is one of six scenes of witchcraft and sorcery painted for the Duke of Osuna and paid for in 1798. They are probably identifiable as the six \'Caprichos raros\' which were exhibited at the Real Academia in Madrid in the following year. Of the other works in the series two are in Madrid (Museo Lázaro Galdiano) and three in private collections.
Bought at the Osuna sale, Madrid, 1896.
