On the right is a group of the apostles. The reliefs in the background represent on the left, \'The Expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise\', and on the right \'The Sacrifice of Isaac\'. In this context the latter, which is an Old Testament prototype of the Crucifixion, symbolises redemption and perhaps refers to the \'redeemed\' figures of the apostles, whereas \'The Expulsion\' relief probably refers to the \'unredeemed\' traders on the left side of the picture. The overall theme may be intended to symbolise the Counter Reformation movement to purge the church of heresy and abuses. The architecture in the background recalls that of Venice.
There appear to be at least five autograph versions of this subject by the artist (e.g. Washington, National Gallery of Art; Minneapolis, Institute of Arts; New York, Frick Collection; Madrid, S. Gines). The Frick version is closest to NG 1457; on stylistic grounds the National Gallery picture can be dated to about 1600.
Possibly one of the pictures listed in El Greco\'s inventory, 1614; presented by Sir J.C. Robinson, 1895.
