After Jesus\' birth he was circumcised according to Jewish tradition. New Testament (Luke 2: 21). The High Priest performs the act, while Mary, Joseph and two other figures (a man and a woman) look on.
NG 1455 probably dates from about 1500 though the composition may date to the 1480s. Other versions of it exist. The execution is often thought to be by Bellini\'s workshop. Paintings of this subject were likely to have been commissioned by members of a lay association with a special veneration for the blood - and perhaps a particular relic of the blood - of Christ. His blood was first shed in the Circumcision.
The black background seems to be original.
