The interior of the fifteenth-century Grote Kerk (St Bavo) is here seen from the west, looking towards the choir; its appearance remains much the same today. In the foreground at the left is an alms chest. At the right in the middle distance is an organ; the interior of its left door is painted with the Resurrection. Below the organ hangs a painting of the exterior of the Grote Kerk. The congregation is seated around and facing the pulpit as is the practice in the Dutch Reformed Church.
NG 1451 is the only known dated interior by Gerrit Berckheyde. His brother Job painted a number of views of the interior of the same church (e.g. Haarlem, Frans Halsmuseum; Detroit Institute of Arts).
