This incident is recounted in Jacopo da Voragine\'s Golden Legend of about 1275. Saint Eustace was a general who, while hunting outside Rome, saw a stag with a glowing crucifix between its antlers, and was converted to Christianity. Pisanello has filled the surrounding forest with a decorative arrangement of naturalistically depicted animals and birds. One of the dogs growls at the crucifix, while the hunt continues with another hound chasing a hare. The cartellino or scroll in the foreground is not inscribed.
The work, which is thought to date from late in the artist\'s career, possibly when he was working at the court of the Gonzaga, is not recorded prior to the nineteenth century. It was probably intended for a domestic setting.
A number of drawings by Pisanello can be associated with NG 1436, including studies of horses, birds, deer, hounds, a hare and a crucifix, many of which are in the Louvre, Paris. The subject is also comparable to a scene on the recto of a medal he designed (Domenico Novello Malatesta, about 1445, London, Victoria and Albert Museum). The profile of the saint may be a portrayal of a patron. The background has darkened considerably.
