This is an unusual conflation of different subjects - The Trinity with Christ Crucified (the Holy Ghost, represented by the dove, God the Father, and Christ) (see Austrian School NG 3662), and the Lamentation over Christ in the tomb with the Virgin and Saint John. Below the edge of the tomb are the donor family and, in the corners, two coats of arms. The left one has been identified as that of the Bettschold family from Strasbourg; the other may be that of the Rothschild family.
The dress of the donor at the left suggests that he was a canon, presumably from the Bettschold family. Three members of the family were canons of St Pierre-le-Vieux in Strasbourg. It seems likely therefore that NG 1427 was painted for this church.
