NG 1378 is a copy after Steen\'s picture in an English private collection. The old man has a flute in his breeches pocket; the room is clearly the kitchen.
NG 1378, which is painted in grisaille, was probably made by (or for) Samuel de Wilde (1748-1832) in preparation for his print (dated 1771). Steen\'s picture was probably painted in about 1670, which is the date inscribed on this copy but not on the original.
Presumably in the Samuel Woodburn collection by 1854 (and possibly in the van Loon collection, Amsterdam, by 1833); bequeathed by Sir William H. Gregory, 1892.
