NG 1339 is dated to 1650-5 by comparison with other works by the artist, such as Peter in the House of Cornelius (Braunschweig, Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum) which is dated 1653.
There are two drawings by Barent Fabritius related to this work (Stuttgart, Staatsgalerie; Vienna, Albertina). The former is closest to the painting. The artist made another painting of the subject, but with a different composition (Frankfurt, Städelisches Kunstinstitut).
Possibly in the George Bruyn sale, Amsterdam, March 1724; Edward Habich collection, Cassel, by 1881; from whom bought, 1891.
