The cenotaph was erected in 1812 in the grounds of the home of Sir George Beaumont (see Hoppner NG 6333) in Leicestershire to honour Sir Joshua Reynolds, first president of the Royal Academy. It was inscribed with lines specially composed by Wordsworth in 1811. Busts of Michelangelo, on the left, and Raphael, on the right, artists whom Reynolds highly regarded, are included by Constable. The setting is an autumnal wooded glade; a startled stag turns before the monument.
Constable made a drawing of the cenotaph in 1823 (London, Victoria and Albert Museum). This formed the basis of the composition. In 1833 the artist wrote: \'I have laid by the Cenotaph for the present...\' NG 1272 was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1836.
